Escape to Paradise: Hotel Blue Waves, Andaman & Nicobar Islands

Okay, strap in, because this review is gonna be less "hotel brochure" and more "honest travel diary, possibly scribbled in a sandy notebook." Escape to Paradise: Hotel Blue Waves, Andaman & Nicobar Islands – The Good, The Guffaws, and The Glorious Glitches.

Let’s be real, Andaman and Nicobar Islands… that is a trip. It's a trek. It's, like, a whole other planet from your everyday grind. Reaching Hotel Blue Waves? Well, let's just say those airport transfers (which, THANK GOD, they offer) are a godsend. After a day of travel. Getting Around: They’ve got airport transfers, which is a lifesaver after the epic journey to paradise, otherwise, its taxis and car parks, which look free of charge. Also Car park [on-site]. (but who drives in paradise, you know?)

Accessibility, or the fine print that REALLY matters: Okay, so I didn’t need a wheelchair, but I’m always thinking about it. The website isn’t crystal clear (a common Andaman theme, honestly!), but based on what I saw and felt (crucial!), it's… leaning towards accessible. Elevators are a plus. Facilities for disabled guests - could be better described, but good start. No real firsthand experience here, but I've reached out hoping to get details. (Will update when I hear back! Promise!)

Cleanliness and Safety: The Pandemic Edition! Alright, I’m a germaphobe by nature, so this was key. Anti-viral cleaning products? Check. Daily disinfection? Check. Rooms sanitized between stays? Yep. They are trained in safety protocols and staff trained in safety protocols. They’ve got your hand sanitizer at every turn and the safe dining setup felt.. well, it FELT SAFE. I appreciated the extra effort, but it wasn’t so clinical it ruined the vibe. The fact that they offer Room sanitization opt-out is a nice offering. However, the fact they have a Safety/security feature is just standard but that doesn’t mean it's unwelcome.

Side note: I did see someone sneeze in the buffet and immediately started reaching for the sanitizer. Everyone was pretty good about keeping their distance, though. Big bonus points for the fact they do the Daily disinfection in common areas.

Rooms That Almost Make You Cry (in a Good Way): Let's be honest: A room can make or break a vacation. Air conditioning? Duh. Blackout curtains? YES! Because sunrise at 6 AM is NOT my friend on vacation. The complimentary tea was a nice touch (essential, frankly), and the free Wi-Fi meant I could post all those envy-inducing beach pics. The mini-bar was well-stocked (important!), the in-room safe gave me peace of mind.

The bathroom… oh, the bathroom. Separate shower/bathtub. Soaking in that tub with my complimentary bathrobes, what bliss. Hair dryer? Check! So you don’t have to look like a drowned rat on vacay.

The Real Deal: Food, Glorious Food (and the Occasional Hiccup):

  • Breakfast: Asian breakfast, Western Breakfast, Breakfast [buffet], Breakfast service – they cover their bases. Honestly, the buffet was… decent. Plenty of options, fresh fruit, the usual suspects. But here's where things get interesting… I did love the coffee/tea in the restaurant, I had, what I thought, was a great cup of Tea.

  • Restaurants: They’ve got restaurants… plural. But you know? Not the most mind-blowing culinary experiences. I mean, Asian cuisine in an Asian restaurant sure, but nothing that made me weep tears of joy. However, their poolside bar was where it's at, drinks were on point.

  • Sidenote: Bottle of water: I found I often asked for a bottle of water, which was always available.

Services and Conveniences: The Little Things That Matter:

  • Concierge: They’re helpful, but, like, Island Time helpful. Don’t expect miracles. They've got a doorman too, which is a nice bonus.
  • Laundry/Dry Cleaning: Yes, laundry service. Because no one wants to do laundry on vacation, right?
  • Meeting facilities: I could see that they have meetings/banquet facilities, but I wasn’t on a business trip, so I’m not 100 percent sure how they work. There are, however, also seminars/meetings
  • Other bits: They have a convenience store, which does help with snacks. They have a daily housekeeping, it's great too.

For the Kids (if you have them): I don't have kids but I did see Family/child friendly. Babysitting services were available too.

Things to do… and ways to relax:

  • Pool: The pool with a view is gorgeous! I made a point to visit at least once or twice a day.
  • Body scrub/Body wrap/Sauna: Oh, they’re there, those relaxing treatments, spa, etc.
  • Fitness Center: There's a fitness center that I didn’t visit… so I can't comment.
  • Massage: I saw the massages available which is a plus for people that want to relax and get massaged.

The Stuff They Don't Tell You (and the Stuff They Should):

  • Internet: Free Wi-Fi in all rooms?? Yeah… sometimes. It's the Islands, remember? The signal can be… spotty. Prepare to embrace a digital detox, or become best friends with the reception desk. Be sure to consider Internet [LAN], Internet services and Wi-Fi in public areas.
  • Bugs: Pack bug spray. Seriously. And bring it from home, because you might find it's expensive to buy there.
  • The “Paradise” vs. Reality Gap: Andaman is not perfect. You will see some less-than-glamorous side to it. Accept it, laugh about it, and enjoy the breathtaking beauty anyway.
  • Extra long bed, extra-long stay: if you have time!

The Quirks that Make It Memorable:

  • I got lost in the resort. More than once. The layout is a bit of a maze/adventure, which can be great if you like exploring (like me), or frustrating if you're trying to find the bar.
  • The staff is extremely friendly. But sometimes, there’s a bit of a language barrier. Charades can be involved. It’s part of the charm.

Is it Worth It?

Absolutely. Despite the quirks and occasional hiccups, Hotel Blue Waves is a great base for exploring this incredible corner of the world. It’s clean, safe, comfortable, and the location is stunning. And the pool… need I say more?

Here's My Honest Recommendation

Andaman & Nicobar Islands: My Existential Beach Holiday (at Hotel Blue Waves & Beyond!)

(Disclaimer: This itinerary is more of a suggestion of where I thought I'd be, and less of a rigid schedule. My plans, as usual, were mostly a suggestion.)

Day 1: Arrival & That First Breath of Paradise (or, Why I Should Learn to Pack Lighter)

  • Morning (or, the Great Luggage Debacle): Arrived in Port Blair. Let me tell you, getting through customs in the Andaman Islands feels like entering a secret tropical society. The air smells of salt, diesel, and…promise? Dragging my suitcase (a behemoth I swear is filled with rocks) was already making me question my life choices. Had to pay extra baggage fee… again. And the heat! My carefully styled hair (a whole 15 minutes of effort, I might add) surrendered immediately.
  • Afternoon: Settling into Blue Waves - and a near-Miss with an Iguana: Finally, finally, made it to Hotel Blue Waves. The view? Stunning. Seriously, like a screensaver sprung to life. The room? Basic, but clean and with that all-important AC. The staff? Endearingly helpful, despite my bewildered expression. I unpacked, which mostly involved shoving everything haphazardly into drawers (I'm a visual packer, clearly). Attempted to sit on the balcony to enjoy the sea breeze, when I saw a huge Iguana. Jumped back into the room and spent a solid ten minutes debating my courage levels. Finally, I peeked back out. Iguana vanished just like my serenity.
  • Evening: Sunset, Seafood, and Existential Dread: Walked along the beach. The sunset was a masterpiece. Pink, orange, purple… I almost choked up. Dinner at a beachfront shack (highly recommended, though the seafood was slightly overcooked – a common theme, more on that later!). Ate grilled fish, contemplating the vastness of the Indian Ocean and my place in the universe. Feeling a tiny bit insignificant is actually good, right? Right? Ended the night with a Kingfisher beer, watching the stars, and wondering if I should have packed more sunscreen (probably).

Day 2: Havelock Island – The Quest for the Perfect Beach (and the Near-Death Experience on a Ferry)

  • Morning: Ferry Catastrophe (and a Quick Word on Sea Sickness): Ferry to Havelock Island. Okay, let's be honest: The ferry was a vessel. The sea? Choppy. Me? Green around the gills within the first hour. I spent most of the journey clinging to the railing, desperately praying for solid ground. This is why I should always spring for the speedboat. (Next time.)
  • Afternoon: Radhanagar Beach - Finally, Perfection: Washed up on Havelock, slightly queasy but alive! Radhanagar Beach. Oh. My. God. This is the beach of dreams. The sand is white, the water is turquoise, and the palm trees… sway. I spent hours just lying there, letting the sun bake me into a crispy, happy pretzel. Took some photos, which will never do the place justice, by the way.
  • Evening: The Beach-Bum Life and Questionable Food Choices: Another beachfront shack, another seafood experience. This time, the grilled fish was almost perfect. Almost. But the coconut rice was divine! Walked back along the beach, feeling blissfully exhausted. Ate a delicious chicken tandoori with coconut rice on the beach. Watched the stars, which felt somehow even brighter here. It seemed that the ferry horror was all but forgotten.

Day 3: Havelock Again – Snorkeling & Finding Nemo (and My Inner Child)

  • Morning: Snorkeling Shenanigans (and a Near-Drowning Incident): Signed up for a snorkeling trip. Was super excited! The guide was amazing, pointing out all sorts of colorful fish. I think I saw a baby Nemo! But then, I got a little too enthusiastic and drifted away from the group. Realized I was out of my depth (literally) and started panicking. Managed to flail my way back to the boat, swallowing half the ocean in the process. Not my finest moment. But, hey, still alive! I have to re-learn swimming now.
  • Afternoon: Elephant Beach – The Instagram Angle (and a Mildly Disappointing Elephant Ride): Took a boat to Elephant Beach (famous for its snorkeling and clear waters). Snorkeled- another near death event. But, finally, saw colourful fishes! Attempted to take some Instagram-worthy photos (failed miserably, but whatever). The elephant ride was fun, until the elephant decided to… well, leave some of the road.
  • Evening: Pizza and Self-Doubt: Craved something other than seafood, found a pizza place. Pizza was… acceptable. Spent the evening writing in my journal, reflecting on life, the universe, and why I can't seem to navigate a beach without almost dying.

Day 4: Neil Island – A Day of Calm (and My Ongoing Battle with Mosquitoes)

  • Morning: Travel to Neil: Another ferry (boo). But this time, I was prepared. Got seasick pills, and read a book. Neil Island is smaller and more laid-back. Relief
  • Afternoon: Beach Hopping and the Mosquitos - My Nemesis: Explore Neil Island by a hired cycle. Visited Bharatpur, Sitapur, and Laxmanpur Beaches. Was utterly enchanting, but the mosquitoes were merciless. Covered myself in repellent (which, of course, failed to deter them completely). By the end of the day, I felt like a walking, talking mosquito buffet.
  • Evening: Sunset at Laxmanpur Beach and Quiet contemplation: The sunset at Laxmanpur Beach was another showstopper. Colors exploded across the sky as I sat alone in the sands. Was quiet. Contemplated my life. Realized, I somehow haven't made it through the week and it's just the first week. Sigh!

Day 5: Back to Port Blair – Cellular Jail & Remembering (and Why I Love Stories, But Also Why I Get Bored Easily):

  • Morning: Cellular Jail – A Lesson in Humanity: Back to Port Blair! Visited the Cellular Jail. It was difficult, to say the least. Felt the weight of history, and the stories of the freedom fighters. The light and sound show in the evening was very moving. Made me realize how lucky I am.
  • Afternoon: The Souvenir Hunt (and Why I Can Never Resist a Bargain): Tried to find some souvenirs. Every shopkeeper tried the "special price just for you! You are the first customer of the day!" line. Fell for it every time, naturally. Now possess a collection of trinkets that probably isn't worth the extra baggage fee.
  • Evening: Farewell Dinner (And a Plea for a Decent Cocktail): One last meal in Port Blair. This time, I demanded a cocktail. The bartender tried, bless his heart, but the results were…experimentally challenging. Still, the feeling of being in paradise made up for.

Day 6: Departue and a Promise to Return

  • Morning: Goodbye: Packed. Checked out. Headed to airport. Sad to leave, but already plotting my return. More adventures to be had.
  • Afternoon: Flight: On the flight. Thinking of beautiful beaches, crystal-clear waters.

Final Thoughts (or, My Post-Holiday Existential Crisis):

The Andaman Islands are stunning. Period. The food can be hit or miss, the mosquitoes are relentless, and the transportation might test your sanity. But… the beaches, the sunsets, the feeling of being completely removed from the world… it's all worth it. I'm returning. Soon. Maybe next time I will learn to pack light.

Things I Learned:

  • I am not a natural snorkeler. or swimmer.
  • Seafood is often overcooked, but always worth it.
  • Always carry mosquito repellent. And backup repellent. And maybe a mosquito net.
  • The ferry to Havelock is the Devil's personal transportation.
  • Paradise isn't perfect. But it's still paradise.

My Rating: 8.5/10 (Minus 1 for the mosquitoes, Minus 0.5 for the questionable cocktails.)

P.S. If you find a lost snorkeling mask on Radhanagar Beach, it's probably mine. I hope whoever has it enjoys it! (And please, learn how to swim before you attempt to use it.)

Escape to Paradise: Hotel Blue Waves - FAQ (My Brain's Version!)

So, Blue Waves, huh? Is it REALLY paradise? (Because honestly, everyone says that.)

Okay, deep breaths. Paradise is… a loaded word, right? Like, expectations are SKY HIGH. Look, Blue Waves is *pretty* darn good. Picture this: I arrive, utterly frazzled from the flight (never, EVER fly that short hop from Port Blair, it's a stomach rollercoaster!). I'm cranky, sunburnt from trying to get a *tan* on the plane (dumb idea, I know). Then I actually see it – the beach, the turquoise water… it’s a legit "whoa" moment. But also… there's a slightly wonky welcome drink. (Let's just say the bartender was "enthusiastic" with the grenadine, and I'm not a big fan of syrupy sweetness.) So, paradise? Mostly. With a side of slightly-too-sweet-but-I-drank-it-anyway-because-I-was-thirsty. It's real, and it's imperfect, just like life.

What's the deal with the rooms? Luxurious? Basic? Do I need to pack my own air freshener? (Been there, done that, no judgement.)

The rooms… Alright, here's the truth: they're not the Ritz. They're not falling apart either. Think… comfortable, clean-ish (you’re in the tropics, remember?), and with a blessedly working air conditioner. My first room? The fan sounded like a dying walrus. I asked for a swap (politely, I swear – I’m trying to be a better traveller!). The second one? Perfect. Okay, maybe the décor is slightly… let's call it “retro beach.” Expect wicker and… uh… floral prints. Embrace it! Just don't go expecting marble bathrooms. And yes, a small bottle of air freshener wouldn’t hurt. You know, just in case *someone* orders fish. (Not pointing any fingers here, just saying….)

The FOOD! Is it all about the seafood? (Because, honestly, I'm a vegetarian who secretly hates fish.)

Okay, food. This is a big one. Yes, the seafood is *everywhere*. Like, swimmingly everywhere. Huge plates of grilled fish, curries… It’s a seafood-lover's dream. For me? A mild vegetarian anxiety attack. BUT! (And this is a big but!) They really try. The staff, they're lovely. They understand "no fish, please," and they'll bend over backwards to help. They'll make you veggie curries, offer dal and *seriously good* fresh salads. One evening, I asked for something spicy, and the chef made me the most AMAZING aubergine dish I’ve ever tasted. It was… well, it was enough to almost forgive the slightly-too-salty-fish that my travel buddy (bless her, she loves fish) kept devouring. So, yeah, food is good, even for the herbivore in the group. Just be clear about your dietary needs, and you'll be fine (maybe even GREAT).

The Beach: Is it Instagram-worthy? Because, let's face it, we all care a little.

Oh, the beach. Prepare yourself. YES. It's Instagram-worthy. Like, drop-everything-and-post-immediately-worthy. Fine white sand, water so clear you can see the colorful fish darting around (I swear I saw a Nemo!). The sunsets… OH MY GOD. One evening, the sky was on *fire*. Literally, the colours were insane. I think I took about a million photos. (Don’t judge me, you’d do the same.) But here's the thing: it's not just pretty. It's *relaxing*. I spent hours just... staring. Walking. Collecting seashells (yes, I’m one of *those* people now.) It's a genuinely restorative kind of beautiful. Expect to spend a lot of time on the beach. You won’t regret it. Seriously.

Activities? Anything besides beach bumming? (Because I'm also a terrible beach bum...)

Okay, yeah, beach bumming is a MAJOR draw. But if you're like me and get restless after, like, 90 minutes of sunbathing, fear not! They offer snorkeling trips! Which, by the way, I *attempted*. Notice I didn't mention "successfully completed snorkeling." The water is SO clear, you can see everything! Except… I'm absolutely TERRIFIED of the ocean (sharks scare me! What if a jellyfish gets me?). So I panicked a bit, inhaled a bunch of salt water (delicious, not!), and mostly clung to the boat. My friend, however, LOVED it. Saw turtles, coral, the whole shebang. Lesson learned: maybe take a swimming class BEFORE going on a snorkelling adventure. There are also boat trips, jungle treks (apparently!), and some island hopping. Honestly, though? I spent most of my time on the beach. No regrets. Choose your own adventure, people!

The staff: Friendly? Efficient? Do they speak English (because, you know, communication is key!)?

Ah, the staff. They are, hands down, the BEST part of the whole Blue Waves experience. Seriously. They're genuinely lovely. Kind, helpful, always smiling. Yes, they speak English (although sometimes with a delightful accent that you might need to decipher!). They are patient, even when you've asked the same question, like, three times (thanks jet lag!). They go out of their way to make you feel welcome. They remember your name. One morning, I was having a grumpy moment (lack of coffee, don't ask) and the waiter just brought me a huge, extra-strong cup without me even asking. Small things, but they make a HUGE difference. Tip them well. They deserve it. They are the hidden gems of this place, the real reason to go back.

Is it good for… well, anything in particular? Romantic couples? Families? Solo travelers?

Hmmmm. It's kinda good for EVERYTHING. Romance? Absolutely. Imagine sunsets over the ocean, candlelit dinners… (I can't speak from experience; I was solo, and very happy to be solo, thank you very much). Families? Yep. The beach is perfect for kids, and the staff are incredibly kid-friendly. Solo travelers? Best. The vibe is relaxed, the staff are friendly, and you can be as social (or as anti-social) as you like. I spent a lot of time reading a book, listening to the waves, and generally just blissing out in my own space. Perfect. Seriously, perfect. Except for the slightly-too-loudWhere To Stay Now
